I’d like to know how many people use facebook excessively? I mean, being into IT (Info Tech), I understand the desire to constantly be “connected,” but how much is too much? About a year ago, one of my people said “I’m getting off facebook for a while, I’m addicted to it.” Does anyone realize this stuff actually is an addiction? People check it at work, at home, have the application on their phone – do you REALLY need to be on it ALL the time? Especially when people use it as a communications tool more than seeing people face-to-face. Don’t get me wrong, Facebook is a great tool to keeping in touch with people, especially those that are either far away or people you haven’t seen in ages. People who say they have an addiction need to wake up and realize there’s something called “your life”! Just like crack, any addiction’s bad for you!
But the funny thing about facebook is how people are getting fired over it. Straight up..are people that stupid? If you have strong privacy settings, good for you! If you actually think about the people you accept as friends, good for you! Don’t blindly click “Accept” just b/c the person is considered mutual. Now a story came out yesterday that some girl changed her status to OMG I HATE MY JOB!! My boss is a total pervvy wanker always making me do shit stuff just to piss me off! WANKER! Little did she know, her boss was her FB friend, saw the status and put her on BLAST telling her not to bother coming in. Check out the full story here.
You got to be _____ kidding me. This is one of many times where an inappropriate comment has been made and the person ended up getting fired or “disciplined” in some manner. Moral of the story: THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU TYPE! Realize that people are gonna see this and make judgment calls or assume things and that you may end up getting fired! Use common sense, it’s ridiculous how so many people seem to lack this in general.
Another concept about facebook people need to grasp is that social networking (in general) is being used MORE AND MORE by potential employers? Why? Because it gives you a glimpse into what the person does as hobbies, who their friends are and so forth. Example: Person A applies at some firm. They’re doing some background work – you don’t have a criminal record, sweet!! – and decide to get on Facebook. Person A’s page doesn’t have any privacy settings so they have full access (yes, some people still haven’t touched these settings). What does the firm see? Person A with (insert your drink) in his hand and a middle finger in a picture. Don’t get me wrong, yes we ARE entitled to privacy, but facebook is on the Internet which is open to all. You don’t set privacy constraints on your page? Tough luck. On the other hand should we be judged by that picture? Should? No. Are we? Most likely. Is that fair? No. But life isn’t, so get with it. And boom! Person A doesn’t get the job b/c of that picture.
Trust me, more and more employers are extending their background checks to social networking.
